Tropical Mix Reforestation
Gold StandardPanama
Sobre el proyecto
Tropical Mix is a Gold Standard reforestation project across approximately 3,095 hectares of heavily degraded former cattle pastures in Panama. More than 2.5 million trees have been planted, combining native timber species (such as Teak, Amarillo, and Mahogany) with cocoa under a polyculture system that mimics the architecture of a native tropical forest. The project is developed by ForestFinance and CO2OL, and is FSC certified across all project sites. The project delivers an average of over 45,000 tCO₂e per year in biological carbon removal, with credits issued under the Gold Standard for the Global Goals (GS4GG) framework. The crediting period runs for 30 years (2014 to 2044), and the Sylvera "BB" rating gives buyers an additional independent quality signal. Cocoa is grown to UTZ / Rainforest Alliance standards, and the combination of FSC, Gold Standard, and Sylvera makes this an unusually rigorous reforestation asset. Community benefits Local job stability: The project provides year-round, permanent contracts with full social-security benefits for more than 150 local workers, a strong contrast to the seasonal, precarious farming work traditional to rural Panama. Capacity building and education: Employees receive intensive, ongoing training in sustainable forestry, organic cocoa management, fire prevention, and technical health and safety protocols. Ancillary local economies: The project fosters secondary local businesses by sourcing supplies locally and supporting community-managed sustainable agroforestry networks. Environmental and biodiversity benefits Native ecosystem rebirth: Rather than a commercial monoculture, Tropical Mix uses a polyculture system combining native tree species (Teak, Amarillo, Mahogany) with cocoa, mimicking the natural architecture of a native tropical forest. Permanent wildlife corridors: More than 25% of the total project area is strictly designated as permanent nature reserve where no harvesting takes place, acting as safe ecologica
