The HKm operational area is situated to the south of Meragun Sub-Village of Meragun Village, Nanga Taman Sub-District, Sekadau District and is located within Gunung Naning Protection Forest area. It is a hilly area consisting of primary forest (60%), secondary forest (20%), and other uses for agroforestry (tembawang traditional area), rubber field and ex-farming bushes (20%). Being once damaged due to encroachment, the Government eventually applied HKm scheme in this area to restore the forest functions and lever the community economy. This scheme is applied involving Beganak Farmer Group to a management area of 2,375 hectares. HKm and Non-Timber Forest Product (NTFP) Sources of economy that the community develops are, among others, rubber and NTFPs such as local fruits, decorative plants, medicinal herbs and local vegetables. These NTFPs are traded near the villages up to the sub-district capital. Meragun community also develops local handicraft business such as rattan takin, woven mat, thatch, etc. Timber forest products such as Borneo kauri, Meranti, Gerunggang, Tengkawang, etc. are used for constructing houses, bridges and public facilities. These timber products are taken by community from limited production forests or cultivation areas and not from protection forest areas. Purpose • To increase carbon stock at landscape level through plant enrichment in Beganak Meragun HKm operational area. • To develop cultivation of agarwood (Aquilaria moluccensis), rubber (Hevea braziliensis), Light Red Meranti (Shorea stenoptera) and local fruit species such as durian (Durio kutejensis), mango- steen (Garcinia mangostama) , rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum), stink bean (Parkia speciosa), jering (Pitcellobium lobatum), mentawa and kemayau to guarantee the protection function and increase family income. Objective • To strengthen HKm managing actors’ economic conditions. • To maintain sustainability of ecosystems of forest and the surroundings.
