Forest damage serves us dearly a great lesson. Until flood and drought came over and over again, the community of the six villages under the Customary Institution of Tigo Luhah Kemantan had harvested timber and cleared lands in their surrounding forest without rules. Closely similar condition is also experienced by Pungut Mudik Village community. Uncontrolled forest use resulted in ecosystem degradation. For the sake of sustainability of the natural service that has well provided for them, the commu- nity of these two areas reformed their forest use behaviour. The ownership of the forests around their villages being part of Kerinci ecosystem is converted into public ownership and managed under customary rules. For further development, the community is now preparing to tailor a model of community-based forest conservation. Purpose and Objective • To preserve functions of the customary forest area as the buffer zone and clean water provider- to Kerinci District. • To develop a sustainable customary forest man- agement model applying agroforestry pattern ca- pable of producing economic value- added for the customary forest area-managing community.
